More recently, a randomized, parallel-group trial presented at the SLEEP 2026 conference compared an 980-milligram nightly dose of Reishi extract, standardized to 6 percent triterpenes, against 5 milligrams of nightly melatonin in 218 adults with chronic insomnia over eight weeks. Reishi produced a significantly larger reduction in Insomnia Severity Index scores than melatonin, with researchers pointing to Reishi's effects on GABAergic neurotransmission as the likely mechanism. It's a genuinely notable finding, though as with most Reishi research, larger and more diverse trials will help confirm how consistently this result holds up.

What Other Mushrooms Bring to a Sleep Routine

Reishi isn't the only mushroom relevant to sleep, even if it's the most direct. Because chronic stress and an overactive nervous system are common reasons people struggle to fall or stay asleep, mushrooms that support the body's broader stress response, rather than sleep chemistry specifically, can play a supporting role. This is part of why Reishi is so often paired with lifestyle basics like consistent sleep timing and reduced evening screen exposure rather than treated as a standalone fix.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Reishi is generally described as working gradually rather than acting like a sedative you take and immediately feel. Most of the human research suggests consistent nightly use over several weeks is what produces meaningful, measurable improvement, which is a good reason to think of it as a routine you build rather than an occasional remedy.
