The gains from a hard training session come from how well your body repairs itself afterward, and two mushrooms in particular, Cordyceps and Reishi, have the most substantial research behind them for this specific purpose.

Cordyceps: Reducing Inflammation, Not Just Adding Energy

Cordyceps is rich in antioxidant compounds that help address the oxidative stress that builds up after intense exercise, a major contributor to muscle soreness. Cordycepin, the compound most associated with Cordyceps' effects, has been shown in preclinical research to modulate inflammatory mediators like cytokines, which may blunt excessive exercise-induced inflammation and support faster tissue repair. A narrative review of human studies on Cordyceps militaris supplementation found promising, though still mixed, signals for post-exercise recovery, with researchers noting that standardized dosing trials are still needed before firm recommendations can be made.

Reishi: Managing the Inflammatory Load of Training

Training itself is a form of physiological stress, and Reishi's triterpenoid content has documented effects on inflammatory signaling and immune regulation, both of which matter when you're training frequently and can't afford extended downtime from illness or injury. Research has also found that Reishi can lower blood lactate levels and blood urea nitrogen, a marker of protein breakdown associated with muscle catabolism, alongside increases in antioxidant enzyme activity, pointing to a role in supporting the body's overall recovery capacity rather than one narrow mechanism.

Why the Combination Makes Sense

Cordyceps and Reishi complement each other well in a recovery context: Cordyceps is more directly tied to energy output and oxygen utilization, while Reishi takes a broader approach, supporting recovery, immune resilience, and stress regulation. Athletes coming out of a demanding training block or competition are often pointed toward Reishi specifically, since compressed recovery windows are exactly the scenario where its immune-regulating and anti-inflammatory effects are most relevant.

Setting Expectations

As with most functional mushroom research, the animal and cell-based data for both Cordyceps and Reishi are more extensive than the human trials so far, and researchers are consistent in describing the current evidence as promising rather than definitive. That's a good reason to treat these mushrooms as one part of a broader recovery routine, alongside the fundamentals like sleep, hydration, and adequate protein intake, not a replacement for any of them.
