Not all mushroom supplements are created equal. Here's what separates a genuinely potent extract from a diluted one, and how to verify quality before you buy.

The mushroom supplement market has grown quickly, and quality control hasn't always kept pace with demand. Understanding a few key terms can be the difference between a product that delivers real, active compounds and one that's mostly filler dressed up with an impressive-sounding label.
Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium on Grain
Mycelium is the root-like network mushrooms grow from, and many budget supplements are made by growing this mycelium on a bed of rice or oats and then grinding up the entire mixture, grain and all, rather than removing it. The result is a product where much of what's in the bottle is starch, not concentrated mushroom compound. Fruiting body extracts, taken from the actual mushroom itself, generally contain a meaningfully higher concentration of the beta-glucans people are buying these supplements for in the first place.
Why Beta-Glucan Percentage Is the Number That Matters
A label that lists total polysaccharide content can be misleading, because that measurement includes starch along with beneficial beta-glucans. Quality fruiting body extracts typically test in the range of 25 to 40 percent beta-glucans, while mycelium-on-grain products often test at only 1 to 5 percent. One analysis of 19 different Reishi products found that more than half had no detectable triterpenes at all, the very compounds that give real Reishi its bitter, characteristic profile, and roughly two-thirds contained starch-like filler material. In other words, a supplement can carry the name of a mushroom on its label without containing much of that mushroom in a meaningful, bioactive form.
What Third-Party Testing Actually Verifies
Reputable manufacturers test raw materials and finished products for heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic, along with pesticide residues, microbial contaminants, and mycotoxins produced by mold. Independent, third-party laboratory testing matters here specifically because it removes the manufacturer's own financial incentive from the equation, verifying compound content and purity through an outside lab with no stake in the result.
How to Check a Product Before You Buy
Look for a stated beta-glucan percentage rather than a vague polysaccharide number, confirmation that the product is made from fruiting bodies rather than mycelium-on-grain, a clearly disclosed extraction method, and a published Certificate of Analysis from a third-party lab with lot numbers that match what's printed on the bottle. If a brand can't or won't provide that information, it's a reasonable signal to look elsewhere.
